What I Have Learned In School

The teachers’ bathrooms are locked where I work.

Having the key only reminds me

          That love and learning

          Have been pre-empted

          By struggle.

War has no respect for private moments.

There is no solitude behind locked doors

          Or comfort in security guards.

          Embattled people cannot contemplate

          Or grow.

          We can barely weep.
