Moving Forward
February 13, 2010
Dear Readers,
We are off to a spectacular 2010. On the heels of releasing Michael Glaser’s Disrupting Consensus in December as winner of The Teacher’s Voice 2008 Chapbook Contest, we have just released Volume 3 #2 of The Teacher’s Voice online. Both are receiving wonderful praise, the latter so much so, that the idea of printing it as a flat-spine hard copy is being discussed (if only a short run of 500 copies). Rather than my describing or editorializing, please look at this issue when you have real time and send a note to theteachersvoice@aol.com. if you wish to see it in print. Who knows if this would not be the first step towards TTV being a hard copy magazine again? Let’s see.
On far more sure ground, the second printing of Mary Beth O’Connor’s Smack Down! (first published under a pseudonym), the winner of our first chapbook contest, chosen by Sapphire, is scheduled for March. I need to say, Sapphire was so kind in lending her support as judge for our first contest when TTV was somewhat unknown, so we are very happy that her novel Push was adapted for the big screen this past year as Precious, achieving national recognition. Of course, I would be remiss to not deeply thank the incredible elder poet and political activist, Jack Hirschman, for helping us with our second chapbook contest.
Please spread the word about TTV. Tell folks we always need more good strong work and to visit us. Since the founding of TTV in 2005 the state of U.S. education, in spite of all the new political PR campaigns, continues to worsen for poor and working class children, teens, and young adults—ask any teacher doing the work on the ground. The children of the more privileged and rich have their own set of serious problems, not to be ignored.
May your new year, in and out of the classroom, be fruitful and happy.
Peace, Andrés editor@the-teachers-voice.org
